For this Behind the Scenes, we're going to do things in tandem. Angus and Pen are both organising their track, so I managed to get both of them to talk about what they're doing. So that you can tell the answers apart, Angus' answers look like normal text, while Pen's have been intalicised. I thought about making it blue and pink (for boys and girls, of course) but some blog readers have issues with color.

  1. Who are you, and what do you do when you aren't doing things for TechEd?
Angus: I’m Angus Logan and I’m a National Technology Specialist for Microsoft. I fill my days (and nights) playing with/presenting/talking about Office 2007 and especially SharePoint Products & Technologies.
Pen: Hi I’m Pen (Penelope) Lewin – I have recently become Manager of (part of) Microsoft Specialist sales after 7 and a half years as a specialist in the Office System. Back many moons ago I was around wearing yellow T-shirts when Sharepoint was known only as Tahoe. There has been a lot technology under the bridge since then and this upcoming wave of technology is phenomenal in it’s capability and enablement of business productivity, enablement and solutions.
  2. What's the secret location of this year's party?
Angus: No idea – but I’m sure it is on a SharePoint site somewhere, perhaps we could use the fantastic search engine (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007) to try and find it – if it isn’t in the search engine yet I’ll subscribe to an alert or subscribe to the search results as an RSS Feed. (unless they have secured it then the result will be security trimmed out – d’oh.
    Pen: You’re asking me???
  3. What track(s) are you running? What sort of things do they cover?
Angus: We are running the Office System track – Everything Office. This is MUCH MORE than just Word/PowerPoint/Excel. This is about everything that comes under the Office brand i.e. SharePoint, client applications, VSTO, InfoPath, etc. There are lots of sessions around the server technologies but there are also some great client focused sessions too.
Pen: As above, but you know what; it’s the track to be at and to be seen at – there is going to be some really amazing stuff covered, some great speakers from all over the world – ok mainly US, NZ , UK and Australia and the smart client session is going to rock. Don’t miss the Office Key Note session it will be the bedrock of the track and will showcase a taste of what is to come over the 3 days.
  4. What else are you involved with this year?
Angus: I did the Innovation 2006 tour which was fun – other than that I’m working on the launch of Office and then the usual – helping customer and partners understand and adopt our technology.
Pen: This year is a big year for Microsoft and I am seriously involved in helping some of our early adopter customers deploy and get remarkable business value from our Office System offerings.
  5. No really, you can tell me. Where's the party going to be?
Angus: Lemme do a search from my pocket PC when I get off the plane and I’ll get back to you ;)
Pen: So you really don’t think I would know that do you?
  6. Why should I go to your track(s) and not a different one?
Angus: Because it is *awesome* - SharePoint is the most exciting product ever. And everyone uses the Office client applications. Imagine not using Outlook or Word or even worse… PowerPoint. A world with none of these wouldn’t be fun. We will show you all the great new features and how to build the best solutions on these technologies.
Pen: Why? We have the legends of Office System presenting this year. We have put together excellent speakers with fantastic experience and great insights both from the product group and from deployment experience including MVPs, MCS and Microsoft Gold Partners. It will be practically the first time you will be able to smell, touch and get in depth insight and education around the 2007 wave of Office System technologies. All other tracks will be sooooo boring compared to ours – hey don’t tell them I said that. I mean it, Kleefy would kill me.
  7. If I couldn't make it to TechEd this year, is there any way I'd be able to get my hands on some of the information presented on your track?
Angus: Sure – you can download the decks – just watch the TechEd Australia website.
Pen: Get onto Angus’s blog or Arpan’s blog or the Sharepoint product team’s blog or … but it’s just not like the real thing.
  8. Why should I even go to TechEd at all?
Angus: Parties, meeting MS people. BTW I didn’t mention that we are flying over some of the best Office product managers from the US to present here.
Pen: Well it’s in Sydney so it is soooo easy to get to. There are going to be some amazing things shown in the exhibitors hall. There is going to be ooooh aaaargh moments, the buzz will be infectious and I am sure there is going to be some great delegate giveaways. I have heard the party is going to be amazing, but don’t ask me anymore about it.
  9. How many TechEds have you been to before? Which one was the best?
Angus: 2 – the best one was the Gold Coast because we stayed in a Casino (and it was my first time presenting) :)
Pen: Hmmmm – I have lost count. I think if you ask me that question in 8 weeks time I will say SYDNEY!!!!
  10. Why is this years going to be the best one yet?
Angus: It is in Sydney and it is the biggest product launch wave for a very long time. Office 2007, Exchange 2007, Vista, HUGE!!!
Pen: It’s going to be the biggest, the best quality, the most exciting, the most technical, the best technical experts and Angus and I have put in an enormous effort to make it the most comprehensive Office track in history.
  11. There's a lot of new stuff coming out in the next 12 months - Vista, Office, .Net 3.0, Expressions, and more. Which one are you looking forward to the most?
Angus: Ummm – Office of course!
Pen: Do I have to choose one? Then it has to be THE Microsoft Office System
  12. And finally, let's say I couldn't make it to TechEd this year, but I could make it to the party. Where would I need to go? ;)
Angus: I’ll let you know when the search RSS Feed aggregates something down to Outlook (my RSS aggregator)
Pen: I really don’t know why you are asking me.

I sorta get the impression that they're excited - let's see how they're holding up the last day :)
